I went with my partner Ris to a really large public picnic on the 4th of July. I wore a large blue and white accented dress and Ris wore a white and red accented dress. The firework display was exciting but what was most memorable was the domestic terrorism we witnessed. The football field was mostly dominated by high schoolers and as the night went on these crowds were besieged by loose fireworks that were thrown into their midst. They would scream and run as large explosions went off. I think I saw them do this 6 times before a security aid apprehended the suspect. But he broke free and tripped through security tape barriers and past ours and others picnic blankets not to be seen again. He was then followed by men in black ski masks. This incident made me really feel what its like to be an American. We are all casual witnesses to incidences of human cruelty, but we see them more as a disturbance of our peaceful evening than a truly horrible event.
Around this time I started making major progress in my mobility through walking backwards up hills and other hiking opportunities. This has enabled me to take on two projects that previously would be too taxing on my body. Both of these projects required that I walk to our residence halls around campus.
Having an on going relationship with the students I oversee is important step in improving as a Human Resources Higher Education Professional. Doing 1 on 1's with each of the DA's is a great way to understand them as individuals and how they interface with our work. These meetings were quick because the nature of my questions were not complex. This is just a baseline. I intend to build in my relationships with each DA during my time. Here are the questions I came up with:
What is the name you would like me to use for you?
What are your pronouns?
Why did choose to work as a DA this summer?
What kind of supervisor would help you be most succesful?
Do you have any ideas on how we can improve desk operations? Such as the the log.
Would you be interested in working more hours?
I will be reporting my findings to my supervisor soon. The actions I have identified from their feedback is to create building specific trainings. To do this I will cordinate with the RLC's of each building to make sure that information is clearly documented and communicated. To further my engagement with my DA's I will go to their desk while they are working at least once a week. This was based on the feedback that their ideal supervisor is communicative, proactive, and encouraging.
My supervisor asked me to benchmark rooms that are critical to the operation of the desk. At Mines, mail is sent to the hall listed on the address and distributed by front desk staff (RAs and DAs). This was a fun project because I got to see more of the campus, explore how halls utilize their space, and create something useful. I still have a lot of editing to do to make the document more consistent and maximize its usefulness.
Fun Colorado Fact. Police were recently granted the ability to wear cowboy hats for the first time since the 70's. 9News
