During the 2023 - 2024 school year at GVSU, there was a sharp increase in the amount of 'harmful public displays' in the Expressive Activity spaces on campus. Many Social Justice Centers (SJC) students have been confused about the application of university policy to free speech in these spaces. Many were brought directly into conflict when they broke policy they were unaware of. The Graduate Assistants at the SJC created "Action Without Reaction" to educate the community on who these groups were, what policies were at play, and help inform their choices in these spaces. During this process, we did a significant amount of research on how GVSU operates its Expressive Activity policies. Through this research, I created the 40-page report, which reviewed all relevant incidences we observed and how policies were or were not enforced in each case. Through direct dialogue with relevant admins, we were able to overhaul the Expressive Activity policy, methods of enforcement, and institution communications ahead of the 2024 Election.
