I took this photo at Denver's pride celebration. This event was overpopulated as is most public events and gather places. Denver is overpopulated and attempting to navigate these spaces that are choked with people who are there for the exact same reason I'm there was a challenge.
My main responsibility is being a supervisor for the Desk Assistants who man our residence hall front desks during working hours. My first task when I arrived at Mines was to create a calendar to manage the schedule for the desks. I choose outlook calendar and made 4 separate calendars, 1 for each desk, and shared that with all DA's. I am slowly finding more opportunities to act in a fully supervisory role and I will update my progress on the topic as this blog evolves.
Here you can see a screenshot of a presentation I gave to the DA's that explained how the schedule worked.
As a transwoman working in higher education I am excited to see that my fellow interns also happened to be queer and trans. The office environment has been very progressive which surprised me. In contrast to my time at Grand Valley, I have experienced no issues related to my trans identity at Mines.
Mines is a no nonsense industry institution that is vital to the operation of the US government, world economy, and engineering industry. While it seemed like every university in the country was dealing with the nature of expressive activity while violently suppressing pro Palestine student protesters, Mines experienced no incidents. From what I can gather the kinds of students that Mines brings in are the top of their class and so up to their neck in work that they do not have the capacity on advocacy initiatives. This is not to say they don't care about world issues, I have been told by my co-workers that they care a lot. I work on the Residence Education team (RED Team), which is part of Housing. My superiors are quick to draw attention to the need to help our students develop the ability to think critically about how they participate as an ethical individual since weapons contractors and petrol-chemical corporations are major employers of the university. I have only done a small amount of program creation related to conflict navigation in the student government. But I am being asked to do more related to the election soon.
This is a video I took while attending Gallaudet University graduation ceremony this year. Expressive Activity is a topic I had spent a considerable time and effort working on in my assistantship and my studies. See more in my papers section.
